This weekend I ventured up to my hometown Dundee to visit my old university Duncan of Jordanstone (DJCAD). Myself alongside my uni pals, went to explore the Degree Show 2024 and see the work of the new graduates.

It has been 8 years since we all graduated but each year we use it as a meet-up and enjoy seeing all the fresh talent. This year in the Graphic Design department there was some lovely work from the students, including packaging work for cider brand, event creative for Dundee Creative Festival and some great entries to ISTD (International Society of Typographic Designers).

It is always amazing to see how the show comes together every year and how the students embrace the different briefs and interoperate them in their own way. I am excited for the new graduates as they move on to their careers in the design space!

It always feels nostalgic to go back through the old corridors of DJCAD, as I have some amazing memories of being there. I enjoy reflecting on my time there and thought it would be a great time to look back at my portfolio from my final year projects. Without further ado, here is a time capsule of my work.

CONCEAL - D&AD: ‘Challenge Beauty Conventions’

It is estimated that for every 11 people there is 1 security camera in the UK. CONCEAL is a unisex cosmetics brand created for users to disguise their appearance from face tracking in CCTV cameras. The product range has been designed to create an abstract aesthetic that cannot be recognised by the OpenCV algorithm that can detect faces. The products are not created for criminal intention but instead for people to allow their personal identity to be kept private and not be put on a database by any government or company.

SQUIRL - Brief: RBS product or service to help consumers manage their money

In 2015 the average debt of a student in the UK was around £30,000. 73% of these students will still be paying back their student fees when they are in their 50s. SQUIRL is an app designed to help students with their day-to-day spending and encourage them to save their money for the future. Better spending will help reduce overdrafts or debts after graduation.
